Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program

Internal Medicine residents care for patients with chronic diseases that mirror the health disparities seen in Memphis and the Mid-South region. Methodist University Hospital will serve as the primary teaching hospital; residents are mentored by experienced teaching faculty. In a continuity clinic, one full day every other week, residents follow a panel of patients along the continuum of care providing comprehensive disease management. Residents will use EPIC.

The program incorporates individualized educational experiences (IEE) as allowed by the ACGME; specifically, the program will allocate up to six months of IEE/electives during the three years for those residents who have achieved or are on target to achieve milestone competence in the foundational areas in their training. The IEE may include more ambulatory/outpatient experiences if you wish to practice in an outpatient setting after residency, more inpatient experiences for those interested in hospitalist medicine careers, or more experiences in a subspecialty for those interested in sub-specializing.

  • The 3-year rotational schedule includes all ACGME required experiences.  Program rotations include:  one month of EM, 2 months of ICU, two cross cover-overnight rotations (PGY2 and PGY3), 4 months of inpatient medicine each academic year, and ten months of experience in outpatient settings. There is no overnight in-house call in the PGY1 year.

  • Didactics are offered during the weekly "academic half day" on Thursday afternoons. Sessions include faculty-driven lectures tied to board review material, Grand Rounds, Patient Safety, Communication and Journal Club.
  • Research opportunities are individualized to each learner’s interests.  Residents will present their abstracts orally or in poster sessions annually at the MLH Research Symposium held in April.

Salary and Benefits

As hospital employees, residents will receive benefits that mirror all full-time employees.  Annually, the salary and benefit structures are set by the Graduate Medical Education Committee and will be shared with you when your interview is scheduled.

  • Parking is free
  • Residents are provided a daily meal stipend.
  • Three weeks of vacation annually are provided.
  • Malpractice is covered by an SVMIC policy while in the program

Applications

MLH will receive applications through ERAS and participate in the NRMP Main Match according to policies and procedures described for institutions. Six residents are recruited for each class.

About the Institution

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH), an integrated, not-for-profit healthcare system based in Memphis, Tennessee, with hospital locations, ambulatory practices, and post-acute care partners across the Mid-South, has had a long, successful history as an ACGME clinical learning environment (CLE).  MLH currently supports over 300 residents and fellows through formal affiliation agreements.

Graduates & Fellowship

MLH will graduate its first internal medicine class in June 2025. The sponsoring institution has an approved ACGME cardiology fellowship.
