Pediatrics Residency
The residency program in NYU Langone’s Department of Pediatrics is driven by its mission to educate and train highly competent pediatricians for careers in primary care or subspecialty pediatrics. The program encourages self-directed acquisition of basic scientific knowledge and cognitive and technical skills, and trainees acquire significant experience with a diverse population of infants, children, and adolescents with a wide array of medical, surgical, and psychological and psychosocial conditions.
Residents’ responsibility for the maintenance of the health of children and the direct care of patients increases over the course of the program in structured, supervised, and intellectually stimulating environments. Teaching and learning take place in the classroom and at the bedside, across the acute care floors, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, outpatient clinics, and emergency departments. Because providing care for patients with rare or complex diseases often requires input from multiple healthcare professionals, the program also stresses the importance of an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to both education and patient care.
The majority of residents’ training takes place in two unique environments: Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Opens in a new tab and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Opens in a new tab. Third-year residents can choose to complete an international health elective in an underserved medical facility abroad. In recent years, residents have traveled to Uganda, Cambodia, Honduras, Palestine, Saint Lucia, Nicaragua, and Ghana.
The Department of Pediatrics offers many research opportunities, and more than half of its residents enter into a pediatrics fellowship to pursue further research in a pediatrics subspecialty, such as pediatric cardiology, developmental pediatrics, pediatric hematology–oncology, or neonatology. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in committees and programs that foster camaraderie both on and off campus.
