Mount Sinai researchers have demonstrated that a two-drug combination—including harmine, a natural compound found in plants—can regenerate insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells in vivo.
This discovery, led by Dr. Andrew Stewart and the team at the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Institute, represents a significant step toward developing a simpler, cost-effective approach to treating both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Unlike existing therapies such as pancreas or islet transplantation, this potential treatment could one day allow patients to take a daily pill to restore beta cell function.
